Proverbs 12:19, Psalm 52:1-3, Exodus 20:16, Ephesians 5:6-7,11, Exodus 23:1-2, Proverbs 19:9, Revelation 21:8, 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, John 8:31-32, 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11
The title of today’s message is literally summarized from Proverbs 12:19: “The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” The Lord’s Word is consistent to say that lies are not His way, that God is truth, and His truth endures forever.
The entirety of the short Psalm 52 proclaims this, especially in verses 1-3: “Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually. [2] Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. [3] Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness…”
We are admonished not to bear false witness (it even being a commandment in Exodus 20:16 “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”). But, we are commanded to expose lies and deceipt, as in Ephesians 5:6-7,11 “Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. [7] Be not ye therefore partakers with them. [11] And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” Which is to say, ‘criticize, correct, or refute’ them.
This means we have an active obligation, as Christians, to not only be faithful witnesses of the truth, but to expose lies. We see this also in Exodus 23:1-2: “Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. [2] Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment.” To be clear in our modern tongue, that is basically saying that if you ‘let things go’, and concede to the masses to not bring judgment, you are are also being a ‘false witness’.
Perhaps some of this is bringing clarity to you about where we see ourselves in America (and the world) today. Where we have not directly lied, we have nonetheless as a society allowed lies to stand unchallenged. Our Media sources have preached lies for decades, and we gave them money and subscriptions to buy their newspapers, and now money through advertisements, while we watch them on TV or online today.
But, just as said in Proverbs 19:9: “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.”, so too can we expect our Nation and this world to perish. Remember that, “truth shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.”
Revelation 21:8 sums up the ultimate fate of those who practice wickedness, INCLUDING those who prescribe deceipt and lies: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Likewise, we see in 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 that the Lord has bestowed upon His believers a special ability to know the truth, and a literal ‘mind block’ on those who hate Him and hate the truth: “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: [4] In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
We see in John 8:31-32 that Jesus said to those who believed in Him, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; [32] And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
And we see this in the strange lockdowns and mandates of today, do we not? Those who have believed in Jesus and the truth have boldly declared Him, and have truly been made ‘free’. Those who have rejected Him and the truth have made themselves slaves to “a strong delusion”, and whatever additional requirements that are continually put upon them by those who rule in wickedness.
2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 says “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. [11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”
There is a connection between believing and/or allowing lies to stand, and servitude to evil. Now is a time to expose the darkness, to call out lies, if you have the light of the Lord within you. You have an active obligation to faithfully do so.
May the confidence and strength of the Lord lift you up in this righteous endeavor. In Jesus’ name, amen.
